MTAA conducted a Roundtable of industry Human Resources and Professional Development professionals at the Australian Catholic University on 15th March 2017. The Roundtable considered two key questions:
1. How can we educate our people to better face disruption and challenge?

Cooperative Research Centre Projects

The Hon. Arthur Sinodinos AO Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science this week announced a $28.8million investment across 13 projects in the latest round of funding earmarked under the Cooperative Research Centre Projects (CRC-P) scheme. This initiative supports short-term industry-led collaborations to solve problems and deliver outcomes for industries that include healthcare.

 

Among the newly-funded projects include technology in ultra-thin flexible 3D-printed batteries for wearable electronics and a new ‘gold-standard’ diagnostic test for prostate cancer clinically superior and economically more efficient than current tests.

 

The latest round of investments builds upon the Commonwealth Government’s first two rounds of investment that total approximately $57.1miliion that has been allocated to over 28 collaborative projects.

 

The next round of CRC-P applications will be open from 3 July 2017, with further information available here.

Non-admitted patient care 2015-16: Australian hospital statistics

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has released a new report: Non-admitted patient care 2015-16: Australian hospital statistics.

 

In 2015-16, about 33.4 million non-admitted patient service events were provided by 604 public hospitals, including:

- 15.3 million service events in allied health and/or clinical nurse specialists clinics;

- 9.7 million service events in medical consultation clinics;

- 2.6 million service events in procedural clinics.

NSW Budget commits $536 million to ehealth

Patients in NSW will benefit from safer and more coordinated care thanks to a record $536 million investment in eHealth which will see the phasing out of paper patient files.

 

  • Investment in ICT infrastructure and systems include:
    $286 million for the Whole of System Digital Platform, which will enhance the digital infrastructure supporting the clinical and other health-related systems across NSW.
  • $236 million for Digital Patient Records to extend the eMeds roll out and ensure patient records are easy to read, accurate and instantly accessible whenever needed.
  • $14 million for the HealtheNet Pathology Results Repository, giving clinicians easier access to public hospital pathology results no matter where tests originally happened
  • Continue the Electronic Medications Management System ($29 million in 2017-18)
  • Continue the Corporate Systems 2B ($6 million in 2017-18)
  • Continue the ICT for NSW Ambulance ($4.5 million in 2017-18)

Therapeutic Goods Amendment Bill 2016

The Therapeutic Goods Amendment (2016 Measures No. 1) Bill 2016 has now passed through the Senate without amendments.


On 10 February 2017 MTAA received an invitation from the Community Affairs Legislation Committee to provide a written submission on the Therapeutic Goods Amendment (2016 Measures No. 1) Bill 2016 which was submitted in March 2017.


The MTAA supports the overarching intentions of the proposed amendment to implement key recommendations of the Expert Panel Review of Medicines and Medical Devices Regulations relevant to medical devices.
