HTA
The Australian medical technology industry includes a diversity of manufacturers and suppliers of medical devices, in vitro diagnostics and medical imaging equipment. These medical technology companies range in size and range from emerging Australian companies to subsidiaries of large multinational companies.
The product portfolios of these companies is equally diverse and includes disease screening technologies, therapies, equipment and supplies - everything from expensive, complex capital equipment (such as x-ray machines and MRI scanners) to simple items (such as bandages and syringes) and highly evolved technologies (such as implantable prosthetic devices). The industry is also characterised by a high level of innovation, resulting in short life cycles for many products. Many medical devices undergo constant development based on feedback from medical practitioners and advances in other sciences relevant to medical technology.
There is a growing demand globally to demonstrate the value of innovative medical technologies for a range of purposes, including reimbursement. There is a parallel need in the medical technology industry to develop competence in health economics. MTAA has identified the need to build capacity across the industry.
